Fanfare Contributor Bio

Michelle Dulak Thomson

I am a violinist and violist with a long history of writing about music. After earning an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 1988, I spent a year in London studying both instruments and then returned to California, this time as a graduate student in musicology. I’ve written for—among other publications—Strings, Early Music America, American Record Guide, and the New York Times. San Francisco Chronicle music journalist Robert Commanday hired me as associate editor when he started the online zine San Francisco Classical Voice, and I carried on as sole editor for some time after his retirement.
